Better Comments with Reply is a plug-and-play app designed to enhance Jira's commenting system by introducing threaded comments and reply functionalities. This integration allows for more organized discussions within Jira issues, facilitating improved collaboration across standard issue pages, Kanban, and Scrum boards.
Features
Threaded Comments: Enable multi-level comment threads, allowing users to reply directly to specific comments, creating a structured and organized discussion flow.
Board Integration: Seamlessly integrates threaded comments within Kanban and Scrum boards, ensuring consistent communication across all Jira views.
Reply Action: Adds a 'Reply' button to each comment, simplifying the process of responding to specific comments and maintaining context in conversations.
Reply notifications: When a user replies, the author of the parent comments gets an email notification about it.
Unread flag: A reply gets a “NEW” tag/flag if unread by the current user (if indeed the reply was for a comment authored by the current user)
Unread JQL functions: Returns issues that contain unread replies for the current user. Read more below.
Installation
The usually ways:
From within Jira: Manage Apps → Find new apps. Search for it, and install.
Or download install file from Marketplace page and then install it (if possible in Manage Apps)
Configuration
Once installed, navigate to the app's configuration page within “Manage Apps”. Menu item is found in left side.
Toggle the option to enable functionality for all projects or select which (next tab).
Enable “reply notifications” if needed as well.
Also you can add “auto add reply functionality” for new projects.
Usage
Replying to Comments:
Click the 'Reply' button beneath a comment to initiate a threaded response.
Enter your reply in the text box and submit. Your response will appear nested under the original comment.
Viewing Threads:
Threaded comments will display hierarchically, making it easy to follow conversations and understand the context of each reply.
Board Integration:
On Kanban and Scrum boards, threaded comments function identically, ensuring a consistent user experience across different views.
Unread JQL functions
unreadReplies(): Returns issues that contain unread replies for the current user.
unreadRepliesSince("-30m"): Similar to unreadReplies(), but filters replies within a specific time frame—e.g., the past 30 minutes in this example.
The unreadRepliesSince function accepts relative time formats such as:
-Xm for minutes
-Xh for hours
-Xd for days
Or an ISO 8601 formatted datetime string.
Note: These functions will only return unread replies that were submitted after version 1.3.0 of the plugin was installed.
Limitations
If users apply visibility to comments (e.g. role), other users might not see the correct reply structure, if they dont have the right permission.

When uninstalling this App, what happens to the replies?
Nothing, except that the threaded/reply structure disappears, and replying wont be possible anymore.
Does this app support both Jira Cloud and Jira Data Center?
Currently, Better Comments with Reply is compatible with Jira Data Center from version 9.6.0 to latest. For the most up-to-date compatibility information, please refer to the Marketplace page.
Will this app affect existing comments?
No, existing comments will remain unchanged. The app enhances new comments by introducing threading and reply functionalities without altering previous discussions.
Can I migrate thread/reply structure of comments from other apps?
Yes, if you can export the existing parent-child relationship from your Jira database, it can then be imported into our App’s tables.

Is there support for Jira Service Management portals?
In Jira Service Management portals, customers will continue to see a standard comment list as they are accustomed to. The threaded comment feature is designed for internal team collaboration within Jira. Note that replying to comments in Service Management projects, can only be done as “internal comments”.
